Scenes from the Weekend

My husband and I were driving towards Cincinnati on Sunday for a photo safari with some friends when I texted my friend, Leann. We do this from time to time, just keep in touch in little ways. "May deep play be in your sights." she said, which completely stopped me in my tracks. Not that this isn't something she wouldn't usually say, quite the contrary, but it was just the right thing at the right time. And so those words framed my day.  Though we were shorter on time than I would have liked, we made a priority of a few spots such as Findlay Market, which, if you know me, food is always pretty high on the list of priorities. You know when someone says something special that just alters your whole perspective? Yeah.

May the long time sun shine upon you ...

You know those summer weekends that are chock-full of good things and you try to be fully present, and capture the essence of it at all at the same time? Sometimes my impulse to keep a camera up to my eye seems to interfere on being fully present. I remember the advice of an inspiring photo instructor: 1) Have your camera with you at all times. and 2) Leave your camera behind sometimes.

While the two pieces of advice might seem contrary at first, if you think it over a bit, it makes total sense.

La Roux - Bulletproof

No doubt you've heard the dance club remixes of Bulletproof and Colorless Color from La Roux, but I was touched by the rawness of this Abbey Road studio recording.

Happy weekend, friends!

State Fair

No August is complete with at least a short visit to the state fair. And really, with everything going on, there's a little something for everyone. If you don't want to sample the ice cream in the dairy building, then perhaps you want to pet the baby lambs or visit the prize-winning bunnies? Aside from the people-watching, my favorite part  is the draft horses, mythic in size and power, they seem to be animals from another age. What's your favorite part of the fair?

Remembering Saturday

After a night of celebrating a friend's birthday here, is there anything better than spending a morning at a place like Glacier Ridge and just walking around, taking in a little nature? Perhaps only one thing, and that's following it up with a breakfast of heuvos rancheros.

Basia Bulat - In The Night

I've been listening to Basia a lot lately, in Spotify, my new favorite source for streaming music. And I'm getting ready to read this book, which has apparently been turned into a movie due to be released next year.
Have a lovely weekend!

Happy Birthday, August!

My neighbors have a boy who turned one this past weekend, a handsome boy. Being the overachievers they are, they threw a lovely birthday party for him, not just with one cake, but also homemade banana ice cream, cupcakes and a little cake intended just for August to dive into all alone. And dive, he did. You've gotta love a boy who gets into eating and doesn't mind a little ice cream in his ear.

Still Not My Neighborhood

It occurred to me, while walking around Victorian Village last night, how very differently people there live compared to those of us more remote from downtown (remote by only a few miles, by the way). Here in my neighborhood, we tend our lawns and flowers, live in the back yard during the summer, and can generally invite several people over if we feel like grilling food. And yet, my parents would find my lifestyle rather cramped by comparison to their own, with their sprawling gardens and a forest blocking their nearest neighbor.  Still, it's interesting, no?

Not My Neighborhood

"Dear Neighborhood," I said, "I love you but I think I need to see other neighborhoods." And so I did, and may again soon.
