Yellow is the New Red

For my 200th blog post, I'd like to ask you, my dear reader, a Valentine's Day question. What is the most romantic thing you have ever done, or someone has done for you? The person with the best response will get a special gift from me. I can't tell you what it is because that would spoil the surprise, and who doesn't love surprises? So just leave me a comment at the bottom of this post. Go ahead, we'll wait right here.

Meanwhile, I'd like to send my friend Leann, who prefers yellow to red, a little Valentine's Day card. Look how the stars shine for you.

For Christmas one year not long after we were married, my husband gave me a large box filled with every Tresor perfume product Lancome made at the time, each individually wrapped. He has given me many presents over 25+ years, including some beautiful fine jewelry, but this is the gift I always remember most fondly. I still have the dusting powder container -- a good place to hide fine jewelry . . .

Cool, Rita, a contest! Here is what I've got.

Last year for Valentine's Day I wanted to give my intended something that no one else could give her. So I took the characters from the book I have been working on, one of which was based on her, and wrote a Valentine's Day story with those characters. I bought some very nice cream colored paper and printed off only one copy. I put it into a red binder and gave that to her with a CD and some chocolates. There is only the one hard copy of that story in existance and I never told anyone about this, until now. It was to be something special between her and I. Of course I think you know who this was and how it all has turned out, but the effort was there.

When my husband Louis and I first became involved, it didn’t take him long to figure out that I loved animals of all sorts, shape and sizes and was not shy about stopping to pet or ohhh and aweeee over one. At first it confused him a little and eventually the animal lover in him came out to walk along side mine.

As a couple we do most everything together including taking a walk down Main St in our little New England town where we are know for holding hands and walking. One day, while sweetly holding my hand to keep it warm and stay connected to me, my husband started to scan the street and vehicles parked alongside the sidewalk we walked on. I asked him what exactly he was doing and he said that he was looking for “boosies”(my name for any animal) for me to see and pet. After that day he would even pull me across the street without a word so that we could accidentally walked into someone who had a pet on a leash that I could pet. My husband gets me….

He also buys me a pair of socks once in a while but that’s another story…

My fiance has done so many romantic things for me over the years: I love you post-its covering my room, a poem to say he loved me for the first time, another for when he proposed, painting me a picture, etc, but the most romantic thing he ever did was something Ill never forget. We watched a very heartfelt movie and when the couple falls in love, there is a song playing in the background and I just cried because I loved it so much. He secretly found out what the song was and learned how to play it on the piano. He lit candles and put a rose on the piano and brought me in to play me the song. He even let my mom and best friend sit in. Then he encouraged me to sing along. The reason it was so romantic is because he is so shy about his piano playing and I about my singing, and somehow the moment got us both to step out of our comfort zones and just enjoy the moment together, a moment neither of us would ever forget.

My husband is not the romantic type so when he does something unexpected, it sends me over the moon and back. One morning as he left for work he took a bar of soap and wrote a love message on the rear window of my car, backwards no less. I was reduced to tears when I looked up in my rear view mirror before backing out and saw his little love offering reflected there! Later in the day it rained and washed his sentiment on the window away but it has forever been engraved in my heart. What did it say? "I love you with all my heart" ~ simple and sweet ~ with a goofy heart with our initials and plus sign, just like you drew in fifth grade, and a line of x's and o's. Oh the moon was so bright that night as I soared past it!

Believe it or not, my most romantic moment was on my wedding day. My ex briefly left the reception and came back in with a dozen long stemmed red roses for me, and "anniversary" card that said "To my wife on our anniversary" and he inserted a zero before the word anniversary. He got a standing ovation while I cried. LOL It was so sweet, and so romantic.

Yeah, that lasted two years. LOL
